Default F1 to J1 visa

Nov 4 2009
Hi,
I am Sudip Bhattacharya, working as a Research Scholar in a University. I have been working in my OPT since November 2008 at the University. Now my OPT is going to expire this week and the University has applied for the J1 visa for me. I have received my DS2019 already.
Can I get my J1 stamped from within the US? Am I allowed to work till my J1 gets stamped? In the situation that I have to leave the country to get it stamped can I go to Mexico or Canada? My F1 visa is valid until March 2010 and I have a valid I94. So in the case that I can go to Canada or Mexico and they ask me to visit home country will I be able to enter US?
Thanks
Sudip
