New York + Experience and steps
Hello! I come here once awhile to read up on information during times of confusion and I just wanted to post my entire experience / process in steps hoping it will benefit anyone in the New York area. It all happened from August 21st 2017. It's has been very expensive process so save some money!

Filed and receipt no received: Nov 24 2017
Biometrics: Dec 1 2017
Co sponsor requirements: Dec 19 2017
Filed affidavit of support: Fed 17 2018
EAD card approved: July 3 2018
Courtesy letter for medical: June 28 2018
EAD card in mail: July 10 2018
Applied SSN: July 11 2018
*ONGOING*

A little background. I am going to be transparent so no discrimination please.

25y/o, from SEAsia, I have an expired passport, no bank acc no state ID no insurance, only form of ID is my birth cert, came legally however overstayed tourist visa (1year), met my husband (citizen), got married, hired a lawyer.

IMPORTANT: I have a file with ALL documents including my spouse’s that I bring everywhere I go when I have immigration matters to attend to. I name it USA

Myself: Passport, ID, Birth Cert + notified translation, Marriage Cert, Lease with both our names, extra ID photos
Spouse: Passport, ID, Birth Cert, SSN card, extra ID photos

First thing first: Getting foreign docs translated etc Birth Cert, Medical Records(see point 5)
I used Nova Language. Everything happened online, no trips needed. They are fast, efficient, effective, fairly cheap for the convenience. Took no more than a week to have my notified docs mailed to my place. Very legit and professional.

Second: Marriage Certificate.
You cannot start the process without first getting married. Getting married without a valid photo (unexpired) identification is a little troublesome. You will need to check on the website to see each state's requirement for marriage. You CANNOT get married in NY without a valid photo ID. I had to go to Vermont (drive) to get married. They only required birth certificate. It's closer than Las V and no trip necessary if you can't travel on plane too.
I went to Brattleboro city hall. They didn't even check any form of ID! It took me only 40mins in and out as it’s an uncommon place to go on a Monday. All in one day.
You will need a book a justice of peace officer beforehand (I paid him an amount of gratuities) which you can find on Brattleboro's website. He needs to be present in order for you to get married.
When you get there, apply for marriage LICENSE ($45), meet your justice of peace, he will take the oath and sworn you in, he will sign the marriage license and bring back to city hall, you then go back to city hall to pick up the marriage certificate.

*Very important

**No need for witness as your justice of peace can act as witness too

**Take a photo of both of you right after receiving the certificate in front of city hall~

Thirdly: Hire a lawyer if you have the means.
I am fortunate enough with a job that pays and since I have been saving in advance to hire one, it was important for me due to my complicated status and I felt more comfortable to have one. Hiring a lawyer has helped me so much. I have had almost zero stress the entire process. Didn't even check any gov website for my timeline or progress.
He is really good lawyer and used to work for a big firm also for immigration. Very decent cost. If you want his information, send me a message.
He filed for everything, all I took with me is my USA (see above) + 2 ID photos spouse + 7 ID photos applicant. $535 for i-130, $1225 for i-1225 + biometrics. That includes my advance parole + working permission.
He later requested for 20 photos of us for proof of marriage of which he picked 10 (take photos with families!), lease with both our names in advance (I think he submitted it?). Only took two trips to his office, we communicate very promptly through emails.

*Very important note:

**If you want to speed up this process, request for at least 3-4years of tax records of your spouse and a job letter to proof his current employment. Same goes for your sponsor.

**Filling the paper very carefully, you got to make sure you have all information correct otherwise you would need to pay AGAIN for the papers to refile.

**My husband added me to his credit card after visiting the lawyer so if you can’t have a joined account, a credit card with your name is good for future proof.

Fourth: Received my EAD card and went to get SSN two days later without waiting.
Read on forums that a wait is necessary? But not in my case I guess. Printed and filled up application myself so I was well prepared. Went on a Thursday to the SSA office in Manhattan on William St, third floor. They open at 7.30AM. Got there at 8.50am, took a number right away since I had filled up the application beforehand cutting almost 3 people(!), saw the officer, got approved and left 9.05am.

*Very important note:

**They only accept PHOTO ID. Employment, state ID, insurance card, passport. EAD card is not enough. Since I don’t have any form of photo ID (expired docs does not apply), what helped me was my marriage certified since it is a gov doc. She mentioned that having your spouse late name helps, therefore when filing other docs add ‘spouse last name’ in the section ‘other names’

**You CANNOT apply for state ID at DMV without the actual card. Thought it would be convenient to get them done on the same day but they will turn you away.

**If you do not have valid identification, apply for your state ID ASAP after you SSN, which I will update my experience after receiving

**After receiving you SSN card, go immediately to a bank and get 2 bank accounts if you haven’t got any already. One as a joint account. Apply too for a SECURE credit card ( Citibank and Discover is great) and start building your credit score. Remember to pay on time and the trick is to keep only use 30% of you limit.

Fifth: Medical Exam. This is really a pain in the **** and $$. My lawyer suggested that I get this done right after I received my EAD card.
Again, request for hx of vaccination from your country, translate if necessary. Since I have no access to my medical records plus don’t want to go through the trouble, I started this checklist from square 1. I researched from the list of approved clinics from uscis and booked an appointment with Statcare on Eastern Parkway being that they are the cheapest for standard exam ($99 + $10 lab + $75 gonorrhea test) and have good reviews that reached out to me. Requirements are 3 vaccines for being 25years old.

Td OR TDap
MMR
Varicella

Researched more and going to Fort Greene Health Centre on Flatbush tomorrow to get TDap and MMR for free. Apparently they will issue me an immunization card that I can bring to my medical exam to show that I got vaccinated. I called and checked for more information. A very nice man told me I just need to have patience and a book with me.
As for Varicella, I don’t really have more information but it seems that Walgreens/ CVS does them for cheapest. I had a relapse of shingles in Feb 2018 and printed a medical record from my Dr, hopefully that would be accepted otherwise I read that I will need a blood test for $50 to prove the virus in my system.

*Very important

**You will need two trips to the clinic 48-72hours apart.

That’s all for now! Will update constantly as the days go by. Feel free to drop me any private messages and I will try to help out answer the best I can. Of course I am not a lawyer so I will only answer base on my own experience.

Policies are stricter, other options??
has anyone here looked into Canada after an application was denied? What are the chances of moving to Canada if USCIS denies the application on any grounds, just a question I am asking. My application is still pending but every month I hear strict policies for immigrants and just worried.
