Journey to citizenship
Wished to share my experience for those who might benefit. This is a long and arduous process but it will work out eventually.
Jun-2011: Entered USA on L1B as Indian citizen.
2013: L1B status extended on re-entry (till passport expiry date; could have been full 3 years).
2013: Applied for GC (EB2)
2014: Switched to H1B (picked up in H1B lottery).
2014: I-140 approved with Dec-2013 priority date.
2014: Started dating my future spouse.
Jan-2020: Applied for GC via marriage to US Citizen.
Feb-2020: EAD issued.
Sep-2020: Received conditional GC (delayed due to pandemic).
Jul-2022: Applied to have conditions removed on GC; received I-797s extending status first by 2 years and then by 4 years.
Jul-2023: Applied to naturalize.
Dec-2023: Completed interview.
Jan-2024: Oath ceremony, naturalized as a US citizen.
Have since applied and received US Passport, update state Driver License, registered to vote.
Have also received surrender certificate and in process of applying for OCI.
My timelines were certainly accelerated due to becoming married to a US citizen. But I have friends who are on a similar timeline; they were able to downgrade from EB2 to EB3 and obtained EAD + GC; now waiting to qualify for naturalization.
It was quite vexing and stressful pre-GC. I frequently considered emigrating to Canada / Europe or even returning to India. Very relieved post GC.
For those in this journey, do not give up hope.
