  • Request for initial/ additional evidence to prove relationship with my mom

After i filed for my Mon last year, they first asked me with a "request for initial evidence" letter to provide pay slips and affidavit of support. I submitted all, so they granted my mom temporal work permit last year Oct, whiles waiting for the next stage. I just receive another letter this March 18 "Request for Initial / Additional Evidence (I-30)"

The five items they are requesting are
    1. A baptismal certificate or other religious document with a seal of the church showing DOB and Place of birth.
    2. Early school records showing DOB, my name and parents name and showing date of admission.
    3. Medical Records such as hospital showing DOB, Place of Birth and parents name.
    4. Census records: a state or federal record showing the name, DOB and place of birth and the names of parents.
    5. Affidavits-Written statements sworn to or affirmed by two or more persons (other than the petititioner or beneficiary) who were livingsince that time.

Please my question is Why would they not ask for DNA test between me and my mom since most of the documents are no more or missing for decades? Can i do DNA test on my own with my mom who is also here IN THE USA and submitt it to them as the right thing to do?

For the #4 above, is it a census record in the USA or back home in my country Africa?

Finally is there any advice please as it is only possible i can get only two of the above requests.

Thanks , your advice is well appreciated.

You are applying for your mom, in this case they don't ask DNA.
The consider Birth certificate, Hospital records, census records, are the good evidence that she is your mom. You can submit a affidavit from relatives and family members stating that you born to YYYY X and they are the witness for that and YYYY is your mother. ( The person giving affidavit should be reliable and old enough to witness the birth).
    - The census record should be from your home country.
I think they are not asking all the five items, you may have atleast one of those. Please check the letter again.

Thank you very much zoom123, yeah you are right the letter stated that "the evidence may include but is not limited to" then it followed with the items requested. I am seeking advice so i do appreciate your help so much, my question for your suggestion for the Affidavit which is one of the easiest i beleive so far, is it possible the Affidavit alone could be considered if i dont find any of the others as it is really difficult bcos record keeping has been very bad thing in Africa? especially coming from a family that went through tough times without a permanent home but was transfering here and there. School admissions was like they asked you to pay your fees and write your name and receipt was issued without regards to filling a form with parents name etc.

Yes you can do so. The persons writing affidavit should be of old enough to witness of your birth. If you can get any kind of school record stating your name and your parents name is excellent.
If any of your relatives there in your town/city ask them to visit the school and ask the head master/principal to write a letter 'whom it may concern' stating your name and your parents name studied there or any municipal record for your birth certificate mentioning your parents name.

If non is working then submit the affidavits.
        Good Luck.
