is it necessary to maintain F1 status during AOS

I am currently doing my phd program on F1 visa. My fiancé is a US citizen. We plan to file the AOS after marriage. Is it necessary to maintain the F1 status during AOS pending time? Will the termination of F1 status affect the process? Thanks a lot!

I think that's the safer route. I have a pending 485 and I'm a senior in college. I did not notify my school about this change coz I wanna wait until I have my GC in hand so that I won't be out of status at any time.
