  • Where is my case??

I sent my AOS papers in October 2013, did my fingerprints in November and received my Employment Authorization in December. In January 2014 I received my interview appointment (my husband, who is a USA citizen is petitioning me) for February. Now I received a letter stating that due to "unforeseen circumstances" our interview has been canceled. We went to the field office in Newark - NJ and we were informed that they did not receive my documents and they will re schedule our interview when they receive the papers. Is that something normal? Do they usually lose papers????? I am a little worried about where is my application .....

Your experience is happening to a lot of Adjustment applicants. Overbooking for interview dates, then subsequent rescheduling or approvals without interviews are quite common.

Newark's response did not mean that papers were lost, only that the interview assignment and file was not in their office yet.

@Ray B thank you for your response. I am worried because I know people that filed after me and they already had their interview and had their AOS approved. Do you know if there is a way to find out where's the case? If it is at the NBC in Missouri or in an another office?

From my perspective, it matters little where the case is housed, as that could easily change tomorrow with a workload rotation. So far in the last year I've seen some cases (Adjustment of Status) being reported at up to four different locations during processing life: Chicago, Missouri, California, then local offices.

Of the hundreds of thousands of immigration-related packages handled by USCIS in a year, it's a wonder that more aren't lost or just disappear, as I have seen at least two such packages (both fiancee petitions) get lost by USCIS (in the last 15 years that I have been involved with processing), followed by an admission that they were lost and a recommendation that they could be resubmitted without new fees.

One of my friends submitted two parent petitions in December of 2012. The father's petition was approved a month and half later. Mom's hasn't been reported as approved yet, but a Request for Evidence showed up for mom's petition, send from the Miami local office, about 5 months ago.
