  • Can I Change my International Student status before my AOS application is approved?

    Hello Everyone,

I am currently on an F1 visa. I have accepted an offer for PhD starting August 2014. My current F1 status will expire at the end of June 2014 so I would need to either enroll for summer school or apply for Reinstatement to maintain my status. Both these options are far from ideal for me at the moment.

I got married and I am currently in the process of applying for AOS. I have not filed yet though (Probably next week, finally). My question is, can I get the university to change my status before my AOS application is approved? A friend told me he is positive I can use the USCIS receipt notification letter (the one you get after filing for AOS) to get my school to change my status.

I really need help on this because it could end up saving me a lot of inconvenience. Thank you!

According to my university the answer is no

I am in the same situation and I hope to file all forms in a couple weeks. I talked to an international student advisor, she said I have to have my green-card in my hand in order to change my status to resident and pay resident fees.
Are you out of status at the moment? If, so you might not even be able to start school at all.
