  • I-864 Part 5 Sponsor Household Size

The instructions for completing the I-864 leave a great deal to be desired.

The situation is simple. I am sponsoring my immigrant wife and we have a dependent child (18-year old university student, already US citizen).

In Part 3, Item 1 was marked "Yes" and so Item 7 have value "1".

Now in Part 5, the values of Items 1, 2, 3 and 4 = "1", so item 7 value = "4" when told to add them up! But the true household size is 3!

The problem is Item 3 in Part 5, which probably should have the value "0" although it is worded in an absolutely appalling (confusing) manner. Item 3 should be worded something like "Enter '1' for your spouse UNLESS your spouse is the one being sponsored."

Is that the understanding of anyone reading this post who has experience with the I-864?

the I-864 is a logical form, although confusing at times.

For Part 5, since your wife is the sponsored immigrant, and already counted, leave spouse blank, so that your total household size become 3.
