  • Got EAD but SS says 30 day hold...???

    Hello,

My new Daughter - In - Law is from Germany. She has her Masters degree...my son and she plan on living here in the states. She received her EAD last week (very exciting step) and went to the SS office today to get her SSN. However, she was told there was a 30 day hold on her EAD which precludes her from getting an SSN. We're a bit confused over this as in our study we have seen where once persons have received their EAD they have been able to immediately apply for the SSN. We weren't really given much more information than that. So, it's our hope that someone on the forum here can apply some understanding and possibly some recommendations too.

Thank in advance for any assistance!

The answer depends on how the SS clerk decided there was a hold: as a Social Security policy, or a real 30-day hold on approval by USCIS of the EAD.

If in doubt, try a different SS office.

Normally, one of two things happens when when applied for an SSN after receiving the EAD:

    1. They accept the SSN application and proceed with ordering it, and you get it about 10 days later; or
    2. USCIS database that interface with SSA does not reflect the EAD issuance yet.

Thanks RayB for your prompt reply. We tried calling regarding the EAD this afternoon and found out their computer systems have been down today. Additionally, they will be closed Veterans Day. Based on what you said I suspect their having an issue with their system may be attributing to the problem. I think we will take your advise and try a different office on Wednesday. Again. thanks very much.
