husband denied visa extsion... just got married need to apply for green card

My fiance and I were waiting for the decision to extend his 6 month B1/B2 visa, during which time we got married. however we just recieved notice that his request for an extension is denied and he is now not valid nonimmigrant status and must leave the country immediately. of course we don't want that. can we still apply for his green card (adjustment to change status... etc?) without leaving the country? what should we do?
