I am a G-4 dependent who has meet the requirements for an AOS under the guidence outlined here:

Trouble is, I decided to pursue an engineering degree at a university in Ontario, Canada (as an international student), and as such am not physically present in the US much of the year, although I fully intend to return to the US after completion.
As I will be living at home (in America), for four full months from May 1st to September 1st, I was considering applying for my green card then, while I am in the United States. I know however that to leave the US and the green card has not been processed then I'll need to file for a Re-Entry permit.
Ultimately my concern is that because I am studying outside the US for such a long time, and I have another three years ahead of me of the same thing, I won't be able to get a re-entry permit and then I will be 'abandoning my AOS' when I return to university in september. Do you think this will be the case?
