Travelling on H-1B with pending I-485

I currently have an H-1B that extends to July of this year and am beginning the I-485 process. However, I was planning on travelling out of the country in March of this year. Can I travel on my H-1B while my I-485 is pending?

You probably should consult with an attorney but I was told while my I-485 was pending I should not leave the country without permission as this can affect the case and Homeland security can lock you out the country for a few years.
