Filing the i485 while i130 is in processing?

My husband was here on an F1 student visa. It was canceled in October and his I94 is only good until the 18th of February.
We filed the I130 on the first of February because we were unable to find a sponsor for the i485,now however we do have one and are ready to file.
We received the receipt for the I130 already and now we would have to wait which could be a problem.....
So are we able to file the I485 or will we have to file other papers to keep him from being barred if he was to return home and wait??
Or will he be able to stay and wait for an approval or denial?

I have no idea what to expect so any answers would be appreciated.

Submit your I-485 packae now, and include a copy of the I-130 Receipt Notice of Action with your submittal.
