  • Question on advance notice / rescheduling green card interview

    Hello,

I just submitted my application to USCIS for a green card sponsored by my wife, a U.S. citizen. From reading this forum, I know that in a few weeks I will get a notice in the mail to show up for a fingerprinting appointment. I believe that a few months later I will get another notice in the mail to show up for an interview with her, at which time USCIS will decide whether to allow my to become a permanent resident. I also applied for an advance parole document that, if approved, would allow me to travel outside the U.S while my application is being evaluated.

My issue is that my wife and I usually spend our summers in Europe. We can get someone to check our mail here in the U.S. on a weekly basis to see if the notice for the interview has arrived but we're not sure we'd have enough time either to return to the U.S. for the interview or to postpone it. In case that's relevant, we submitted our application to the Chicago office and our residence is in Connecticut. Here is my question:

When you receive the notice scheduling the interview, how much time can I expect to have till the interview date? If the gap between arrival of notice and interview day is at least two weeks, we could have someone check the mail weekly and then we'd still have at least another week to return to the U.S. in time for the interview. If less than two weeks, that could be risky. Any opinions?

Many thanks in advance for any guidance on this!

Interview notices are usually sent by USCIS about 5 weeks before scheduled interview date.

Thank you, Ray B. This is excellent to know. Do you (or others) know whether this is a "hard rule" or whether I risk getting a notice with less than two weeks till the interview?

From what I have seen myself and through others on this and other forums, there seems to be a USCIS operating rule to get Adustment interview notices out about 6 weeks in advance of the interview date.

          Rescheduling appointments

Anyone has prior experience in rescheduling an interview? How long in advance we need to do it? I only have 10 days now. It is doctor's appointment. Should it be in person or I can call (but how to give them evidences)

To me, it sounds like you need to sign up for USPS informed delivery. You will get a daily email with scanned images of all your mail on a daily basis. The images are high resolution. Thus, you can clearly read anything on the envelope.
Here's what the USPS website says:
            Digitally preview your letter-sized mail.
Informed Delivery provides eligible residential consumers with a digital preview of their household's incoming mail scheduled to arrive soon.* Users can view greyscale images of the exterior, address side of incoming letter-sized mailpieces (not the inside contents) via email or an online dashboard. Check out our FAQs for more details.
            * Images are only provided for letter-sized mailpieces that are processed through USPS' automated equipment

            Neat, huh?

Make sure you make your interview appointment. You don't want to reschedule that.

            All the best.
