  • Apply for SSN again after receiving green card?

    Hey there
We got her a socual security number after she got her work authorization and now her green card arrived so should we apply for a new card or number? I thought the guy at our green card interview was saying something about that but I didn't quite follow

You get one SSN for life. You don't need to apply for a new one, although I don't know if you need the social security office to know that you wife now has her green card.

Your wife needs to report her name change and marriage to SSA to obtain an updated Social Security Card. The number remains the same.

At the SSA we showed them our marriage certificate and so the SS card already says her married name does that mean we're good to go? Her work authorization says her maiden name will that be a problem? Her SS card says approved for work as well

If the Work Authorization uses her maiden name, you must have used the maiden name on the submitted Adjustment paperwork. Unless you make an issue of this at the interview (if you don't get an interview waiver), the Green Card is going to be stuck with the maiden name, and it will cost $450 to get it changed with form I-90 (for error correction).

Having an SSN card with married name and Work Authorization with maiden name may cause some consternation at various government offices. For starters, when applying for work or benefits (driver's license, etc.) in married name, but with a maiden name EAD, you may find yourself facing a wall.

Was there any particular reason that you submitted the I-765 (for EAD) in maiden name

Thank you. When we filed for 485 and all papeprwork we used maiden name. Then at the interview he asked is if we wanted him to change it for us so we said sure. So her green card says married name. And the SS card shows married name too because we showed them marriage certificate. Her work authorization card is in maiden name however because we got that before we went to the interview.

              Alien Guy,

The Work Authorization is no longer needed if your gal now has her Green Card.
