Not sure of Current USCIS status and last status I entered for a Cuban

My friend is Cuban and entered into the United States in June 1980 with the Mariel Boatlift. He is applying for his I-485 but was denied numerous times before. On his I-94, it says "Parolee" as status when he entered in 1980. His lawyer, who had filed out prior paperwork, listed different statuses like "Asylum Applicant Parolee" "Floating Mariel Cuban".

He is desperate to get this fixed and I am trying my best to help. Any suggestions? I am assuming he would be a Parolee and his last manner of entry would be as an Asylum Applicant?

Please help!
