help for my dad....green card to adjust status or sponsor him?

My dad has been living in an US territory for more than 30yrs
He entered the US territory legally w a tourist visa and after that he married my mom who's a US Citizen but he lost he's birth certificate and he was never able to get a new one 'til now. So, I don't know if we as his kids can sponsor him cause he's already in a US territory or should we get a adjust of status?? I just wanted to get a green card for him but he's situation its different he's been living in US territory for all these time so I don't know what applies to his situation, please any help would be appreciated it.

Unless your dad has been in the U.S. since before 1972 (and exempt from a petition requirement), you must submit both I-130 and I-485, with fees of $420 and $1,070, with supporting documents.
