  • Exempted of Mandatory Military Service (Mexico) What to put on I-485?

    Hi,

I am filling my I-485 because I am applying for AOS based on marriage to U.S citizen. I am a citizen of Mexico in F-1 VISA.

I have a question regarding the I-485 where they ask in Part 3, section C about memberships an associations: "Please include any military service"

In Mexico I was exempted to do mandatory military service, I was in an election year an all people in that year were exempted. However, I did get the document to proof that I approved the military service (in Spanish is "cartilla militar"). But I never had to do anything at all, just show up and sign.

Should I mention that? I do not know how to explain it?

    Thank you

So - did you serve in the mexican armed forces? did you wear a uniform? did you shoot a gun? did you drill? No, right? So - you have no military service.

And before you ask: "memberships and associations" isn't about being a member of the local sewing club, or Costco, or the IEEE. It's about being a member of the communist party and similar organizations.

You are right I did not get any training or even touched a gun. But, I got a card that says that I passed my military service and I am part of the reserves

      Thank you for your help
