  • Just got back from my I-485 Marriage Interview Today

Hey everyone. I've been a lurker on this sub for a while and decided to post my experience.

My wife and I just got back from our marriage interview just this morning and we're both a little anxious. She's the US Citizen and I'm a Canadian citizen on F-1 Student visa (expired).

We waited in the waiting room for half an hour and just talked like a normal couple and discussed an upcoming vacation and what not. When we got called into the interview room our IO was a stern looking man. He sat us down and didn't make any small talk which I don't blame him for.

He opened up my file and went through my form and asked us questions pertaining to the form.

They were all Yes/No type questions.

    1. Are you Mary Stella? "Yes" (Wife)
    2. Is this your address 123 Turkey St.? "Yes" (Wife)
    3. Did you get married on 11/21/2012? "Yes" (Wife)
    4. Are you Stanley Stan? "Yes"(Me)
    5. Do you have a job now? "Yes" (Me)
    6. Did you have a job before this one? "No" (Me)
    7. Do you still attend school? "No" (Me)

There was one minor problem where he asked me for my F-1 Visa stamp and if I had another passport that I didn't bring. I was confused because I'm a Canadian citizen and every time I've crossed the border on F-1 they've never given me a visa only an entry stamp with F-1 written on there. I explained that to him which he seemed to accept. He asked for my old I-20's which I forgot to bring (stupid me) but he seemed to look past that.

So we didn't really need to think of anything and just answered Yes or No. He went through the basic criminal questions.

He talked about the evidence we submitted and asked us if we had any joint assets or bank accounts. We explained that we didn't have any joint bank accounts due to her past relationship with an abusive/controlling husband and but we were planning to open one soon since I've just gotten a job 3 weeks ago. We told him I just received a SSN so we don't have any bills/lease but are in the process. But we did have 2 vehicle titles under both our names and insurance and he just replied "okay" without really looking through them.

We brought a picture album and he didn't look through the pictures. I spent a lot of time putting together a binder with evidence and my wife put together the photo album and nothing.

    No mention of it.

After that he just gave us a piece of paper that said "No decision has been made yet." He explained that there were some further checks that need to be made before an approval or decision is made.

So we're a little anxious as to what will happen. I'm a little disappointed that he didn't go through the evidence we gathered. It seemed he was only interested in Joint assets which is probably our fault.

He didn't ask us any questions pertaining to our relationship at all which is a little worrisome. Throughout the 15-20 minute interview all I answered was Yes/No/Yes/No/No/No.

I'm not sure if that's good or bad. But hopefully everything works out.

Hope you guys enjoyed my experience and I'll be glad to answer any questions.

4/5/15 - They sent me an e-mail saying they received my packaged and processed the payment.

4/27/15 - Suspended my case and Request for Evidence was sent out.

5/20/15 - They received my response for the 'RFE' and my case was resumed. Shortly after I received my biometrics notice.

6/17/15 - They approved my I-765 Employment Authorization and sent me a card the next day.

    7/5/15 - Interview scheduled for 8/4/2015

      I485 interview

Congratulations. I went for my interview yesterday at the Dallas office. No decision was made after the interview and was told to expect a letter in about a month. Really anxious. Do you mind sharing were you went for your interview?

I wish I could say don't be anxious but then I'd be a hypocrite haha. We were in Wichita, KS. As I've been told from elsewhere I was approved on the day of my interview but the notice was sent just today. I'm thinking they just needed another person to approve it.

        GOOD LUCK!

@notafraid can you please tell me when you filled for green card? I'm also from Dallas and I heard there's a backlog and it takes a long time to get an interview. Thanks!
