  • Getting step son SS#

Soon ill be filing taxes and would like to claim my stepson as a resident dependent. Only way to do so is with a SS# or getting a ITIN number from the IRS.

My wife was able to get her SS since she was approved for work authorization. Since we did not apply for work authorization for my step son (13yo) we dont know how we can apply for a SS# yet or will we have to wait for his green card? (Interview is on Jan 7th). Hoping to file taxes by the end of January but would like to have all my bases covered and not delay things.

    Any help would be appreciated.

It's too late to file an I-765 for the child, because his successful Adjustment interview eliminates the need for and opportunity to request a temporary Work Authorization.

As you already implied, the child will not be eligible for an SSN without an Work Authorization or Green Card. You can, however, apply for an ITIN for the child, or simply amend your tax return after the child gets his SSN.
