I am an American citizen born and raised. My wife is not. We have our interview on 2/10. My lawyer keeps insisting that I need my passport (I lost my passport a long time ago and because I haven't left the country in years have no had it renewed). Online I see no mention of a US citizen needing a passport in order for his spouse to successfully apply for a Green Card (she has all of her papers, passport etc). Why would I need a valid passport? Please advise. Thank You

It's okay if you don't have your US passport. You can use your US birth certificate, if you were born in the US or your certificate of Naturalization, if you are a naturalized citizen or your Certificate of birth abroad if you were born abroad by your US citizen parents. All of these can be used in place of your US passport, all they want is to confirm your US citizenship.
