Did we get conned?

Hi I petitioned for my husband for i-130 and just received i-797 approval after 5 months. We have a lawyer and many posts I've seen on the net says we could have filed i-130 and i-485 concurrently. But my lawyer said it needed to be separate. Did he just say that for money and now we have to wait MORE additional months after we file i-485? What do we do now? And, should we fire him?
