  • Couple of Questions Regarding Proof of Marriage

We're waiting for our appointment for our AOS interview. I'm a bit confused about one thing, having your wife on your credit cards, loans, checking account, health insurance etc. is a good way to prove marriage. How exactly are you supposed to add her to these accounts without a SSN? I've tried and they always ask for a SSN? Am I missing the painfully obvious or is there a "trick" that I don't know about?

I'm totally clueless about how to do this without a SSN, a prove marriage to the interviewer.

Your Adjustment interviewer will expect proof of cohabitation (living together) and commingling of financial affairs. If you had submitted your Adjustment package with form I-765, your wife should have received her EAD (Work Authorization) which allows her to be eligible for an SSN.

Thanks so much for the reply. The I-765 has been filled but no update on status as of yet. I'll keep an eye out for that.

Don't forget co mingling of affairs also include taking joint responsibility for payment of bills.
Spouse can add you to their life insurance policy perhaps. Don't think all credit card companies require an SSN to add you to the spouse account.
Cohabitation is the obvious thing so you both have letters going to your address.
Don't overly worry about it. Depending on how long you have been in the country before AOS I don't think officers expect to see a vast history of all your resources being joined. Remember many couples choose to leave finances separate as a personal choice which you can explain.
You have to have somethings proving you are a coulple though as its up to the two of you to convince them you are a couple.

Affidavits of close friends who can say they know you both and believe the marriage is genuine.
Evidence of wedding (photos / bills etc) if you didn't include any of these with your package.
Stay positive and stress less (hard to do I know).
I would hope USCIS are not trying to look for ways to keep genuine couples apart so smile, be friendly and answer honestly and you will achieve your goal for sure.

tried going to the bank and explain you want to open a bank account with your wife and that you are in the process of adjusting her status, they may just use her passport. also some insurance like our only require a copy of our certificate of marriage.

PNC Bank would open a checking account without SSN. Give it a try.
