  • i-485 : Name change after marriage to US Citizen

    Hi,

I recently filed for i-485 , after marriage to US Citizen ( I am here on K-1 Visa) . After my marriage , i took my husbands last name. In my application for AOS , I used my new name . For evidence i mailed a copy of my marriage certificate along with AOS. I got A response from USCIS stating my service records ( i assume its the passport from my country, birth certificate, vaccination reports) show the last name which is different from what is mentioned in application form. They will not be able to proceed further with my case unless i provide them reason / evidence for name change. Can someone please explain if there is any other certificate/ evidence to be provided ? Will marriage certificate alone not prove as a good legal name change document ?

    Any response will be helpful.

    thanks,
    lekha

What process did you go through to take your husband's last name? Can you provide evidence of that process?

In the U.S., a marriage certificate serves as legal proof of a name change to one's husband's family name.
