So I am a citizen and I am wanting to petition for my mother. Today I went to the immigration office to ask a few question and the lady gave me Form I-131, do I need to file this form with form I-485 for my mothers green card? She is already in the States so I don't see why I would need to file this form. Any help/advise would be greatly appreciate it, thanks.

It is highly suggested as this will enable your mother to visit her home country while waiting on her AOS approval. The I-131 is the Travel document / Advance Parole and allows people to re-enter the US without any issues website.

If she doesnt plan on leaving the US during the processing of her GC then you do not need to file the I-131. Otherwise, you can file it just in case and it is at no cost if you file it concurrently.Marriage-based AOS- CHICAGO Concurrent filing
