I fail to understand why so many people are after green cards. Why not remain in your own country ? This is directed especially for folks from countries like India which is progressing by leaps and bounds. Why are they so desperately waiting for years while working in servitude ?

i guess because america has the different states and freedom to live ur truth that is why immigrants are drawn to america. america basically is more tolerance to certain things compared to other countries.

Prachi,
I believe that if you had spent more time in other countries, you wouldn't be asking this question. I don't mean this as criticism, as travelling to other countries is exactly how I began to understand the allure of the U.S. to outsiders. For Western Europeans, younger people tend to gravitate to the U.S. because they are just starting out and America may beckon as the "land of opportunity" and lower taxes. Other than young adults, there is little incentive for middle-aged Western Europeans to come to the U.S., and that allows for shorter wait time for Western Europeans.
I think the answer to why Eastern Europeans want to come to the U.S. is pretty obvious. Conditions are very unstable in the countries between Western Europe and Russia.
But for Third World countries, well-educated people come to the U.S. to enjoy better returns on their college backgrounds, especially Indians.
The East Asian countries (Philippines, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, etc.) have greater competition for jobs for educated nationals, and even less decent employment for relative unskilled folks.
One could ask why immigration is not more prevalent to other Western countries (Canada, Australia, UK, etc.), but closer review will provide you pretty good answers: available jobs that pay well for immigrants are not alwasy as readily available as in the U.S. In addition, tax burden may be much heavier than in the U.S.
