  • GOOD LAWYER? and total COST of i-485 california?

Hey everyone. im a canadian living in california and i just married an american citizen. I NEED HELP finding an affordable lawyer or cost effective way of filling the Change of Status forms.

    I was quoted $5600 to 6300

By lawyers in San Francisco Downtown/financial district.......thats is WAYYY to high..

considering i had a attorney in Virginia say he would have done it for around $3500 TOTAL.

    these prices are
including the 1200$ US gov Processing FEE

Can you please recommend a good lawyer or place that wont charge me an arm and leg for this??

    thanks

    Sam

      Beware of false claims!
You need to be aware of a couple of factors.
On your cross border did you come in under "Legal Inspection" Did you get a I-94 from CBP? If the answer is NO this could be problem,
Your AOS hinges on approval of your spouse filing a "Petition for Immediate Family/Relative" AKA I-130 and the cost for this is $420, also be aware that your spouse will need to file an "Affadavit of Financial Support"
Next is the actual "Adjustment of Status" application which is more detailed and involves a biometric appointment and a background check conducted by the F.B.I. The I-485 filing fee is $1020
There are medical fees which are not part of the filing fees and are not covered by Canadian Social Insurance nor reular medical insurance and must be conducted by a Certified Civil Surgeon approved by USCIS.
You will need to provide USCIS with documentation of your Marriage, passports, birth certificates for both you and your spouse.
Without the additional cost of an attorney you are looking at $2000-$2200

Can one of the mods ban this desperate Florida lawyer? This is a public forum for info sharing and guidance, not a free advertising platform.

With the help from this forum I gathered most of the documents myself and played around with the forms. I then contacted a paralegal to assist me in completion. All my forms were filled out and package put together. I only paid $600
My case was not complicated so I'm not sure if this will work for you but there are people out there that will provide great service at a more than reasonable cost.
If a case is straightforward I really don't see the great need for a lawyer, it doesn't speed up the process or grant additional benefits.
No clue what this route would cost where you are, but these services are out there for immigration applications just do somw searching.

          Goodluck!
