  • What name do we use?

My husband is from Nicaragua and we are starting the process to change his status. He is of Latin descent so he has two last names. These aren't his real names, but for example: Joe B. Smith Brown. However, I only took his first last name of "Smith" What do I put as his name on the forms? Should I only put the name I took when we got married, or should I put his name how it is on his Visa and Passport. It's important to note that we only used his first last name "Smith" on the marriage license and certificate.

    Thank you!

    I would:
For yourself - Put the last name that you adopted on the marriage certificate (you will have to include the marriage certificate and any other documents showing the name change, the forms will also ask you to indicate previous last names) , I would would include a signed note indicating that you adopted the 1 st last name due to him having two last names)

For Him - Put the entire name that is on his Visa Passport (and again include a note indicating that you adopted only the first of the two last names)
