  • got an employment authorization card in the mail today - can i look for job?

    hi,

    help please?

early december we received a notice of action asking for a ton of information on me and my husband, everything was sent and there´s a online status update that the info was received and his being looked into.
Today i got in the mail an employment authorization card - and its the real deal (its got my case number and all the things) - can i start working? dont i need a ssn too?
does this mean the rest of my process is on the right track to being authorized? ...i am beyond happy at this one, but afraid to start celebrating just yet....
many thanks for all the help!

Use the EAD card to get SSN and you can start working right away

Yes, first get your SS card by going to your local SS office. It takes 2 weeks if not a bit more to obtain the card; they will not provide you one there. Also, make sure you take your EAD card with you as this is the reason you qualify to get a SS card. Then once you have your SS card go to your DPS/DMV and apply for a state ID or DL. From there you can look for a job.

      best wishes.

Yes, you just need to apply for an SSN and you can start working today. You do not need to have gotten the SSN to start work; you just need to have applied for one.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.

many thanks to you and everyone else that has replied..so i suppose i can have a tiny little celebration then? ...tiny...given the current state of things.

But i am left wondering one other thing - i found no answers in the many threads here - is it normal for this document to arrive without us having been called for the couple interview? all the information i read to this point stated that the interview was the one that decided everything...somewhat confused, happy, but confused.

          thank you!

Yes, it's supposed to come before. The whole point of the EAD and AP are so you can work and travel, respectively, while the case is pending. Once the case is approved, meaning you are a permanent resident, they are useless.
