The interview went well in our opinion although we were not approved on the spot. The Officer was polite and friendly throughout.

He asked basic questions about our relationship but nothing too in depth and we were interviewed together.

I was previously married to a USC in the late 1980's and started the green card process through that and we separated prior to the two years‚ so the process was never completed. He asked a couple of questions about that‚ again nothing too in depth.

In his words he just needs to dot the "i's" and cross the "t's" and needs his supervisor to go over a couple of things. He said he is confident there are no issues and he thinks he should hear from his supervisor by the end of the week.

I never received a physical green card last time and only had a I-551 stamp in my passport (which I sent a copy of when we applied) and again showed at the interview. He said he could not find an actual green card ever having been issued‚*and he wasn't sure if back then if all that was done was the passport was stamped. He said he had checked and there was no deportation order ever issued‚ and obviously that is a good thing. He asked when I last entered the US (which was back in '88 and I have never left since). He asked what kind of visa I came on‚ and what my intent was at the time. I told him that it was a tourist visa and that my ex-wife had stayed with me for a while in the UK and I had come to visit and then towards the end of my stay we decided to get married. I told him that we had asked immigration at the time if we needed to get a visa extension as my visa was about to expire and we were planning on getting married‚ and they said no everything was OK. He didn't dwell on any of the answers and just continued on with the interview.

He said our I-130 and I-485 were all OK and said there were no issues there. He said due to the length of our marriage I was eligible for a 10 year green card.

It was disappointing to not be approved on the spot and both my wife and I got the impression from the officer that everything was OK and he just needed to confirm how to complete a couple of things.

He didn't ask for any supplemental evidence or anything else. He took a few photos for the file‚ some joint tax returns (for 5 years) and photocopied our Id's and a joint credit card.

Pretty much the only thing we showed him from the stuff we took was my old passport with the immigration stamps in them.

He did ask who filled out the paperwork and I told him my wife did otherwise he wouldn't be able to read it. He laughed at that. My wife did the photocopying for the documents that we submitted and anything such as marriage licenses‚ passport pages‚ birth certificates (pretty much anything that was not black and white originally) was copied in color. That may have led to none of the originals being asked for.

There was always a dread in the back of my mind that somewhere along the line unknown to me there had been a deportation order issued and it is a big relief to know directly from USCIS that is not the case. There is a website I found https://www.justice.gov/eoir/custome...ce-initiatives that does allow you to enter an Alien # to check for deportation orders etc... (I already had an A # from the original application that has remained the same throughout and is the one that was on my EAD).

We know for a fact that the criminal background check was clear (not that we doubted it) because I had to submit to an FBI background check to enroll in a caregiver program for my mother in law (she's 93 with dementia and I take care of her) and have received the acceptance letter from the program indicating the criminal background returned all clear.

So‚ all in all we feel pretty good. Obviously you're never over the anxiety until it's finally approved but I'm pretty sure that everything is OK and it's just a few things that have to be cleared up due to the previous Green card application.

We assembled everything into a folder with clear sheet pockets so we could place the items in from the top and easily see them and take them out.

Our officer didn't really ask to see much‚*a few photos‚ some additional shared information (a copy of our cell phone bill with both names on it‚ 5 or 6 years of joint tax returns).

The only other thing he looked at during the interview was my original passport with the immigration information in it (I-551 stamp and original visa etc...) and that was more because I brought it out when the discussion about my previous green card was going on.

At the end he took photocopies of our ID's (my wife's drivers license) and my EAD and California ID (I don't drive). I only received the California ID last week‚*it took a little over a week to get after we applied for it. We also gave him a shared credit card (two total - one with each of our names on it).

I asked if he wanted to see my social security card and he said no (we had included a photocopy in our original submission package).

We didn't have an awful lot of pictures‚*because we don't really take pictures to be honest. We have pictures of each other but not together. We had pictures of our wedding and a few pictures from over the years.

As part of the original submission we submitted :

joint tax returns (state and federal) for several years
                      joint health insurance
Information on various work related papers from my wife naming me as her beneficiary
Life insurance polices for both of us (from my wife's work).

I don't know how much they look into for past information on couples‚ we have filed joint taxes since 2000 and have shared the same addresses since probably 1998. I don't know if that factors in at all. I'm sure the fact that we have been married for 17 years probably helps.

I have the initial of my wife tattooed on my Ring finger which the officer said he noticed‚*and I also have a tattoo on my forearm in Kanji (Japanese script - my wife is Japanese American) that is pronounced as my wife's name (it means something different - but it is pronounced as her English speaking name) which I showed him. I don't know if any of this mattered as evidence or not.

He told us he would ask us questions and not to interrupt the person the question was directed at. And he watched the person other than he was asking the question to when they responded. I guess they do that to get a sense of how people interact and I would really hope to be honest that after being together for 20 years we would show that we knew each other and were obviously accustomed and comfortable with each other.

I hope some of this helps you.

Be honest and don't lie is the best advice anyone could give you. I'm sure everyone is somewhat nervous during the interview‚ I know we were and I'm sure they expect that.

                        • USCIS about to give me a nervous breakdown lol

All of sudden this afternoon I got three emails from USCIS after getting the "Your Case Status: Card/ Document Production" emails yesterday.

I swear I had to read it three times to make sure it wasn't anything bad. I read the status as "Post Decision Activity" and was thinking‚ oh no that can't be good. Then reading on I saw the part that said "we approved your Form I485".

                              PD - January 10

I got my EAD in April, but nothing ever since. I am checking my status every day, but it is just so frustrating! I saw people from LA with latter PD having interview scheduled, but San Diego is moving so slow. I had no RFE, and everything was moving pretty fast, but now everything is just stopped..

                              • Final updates coming in...

Yesterday 6/12 (Day 146) received the mailed I-130 approval notice. Looking online‚ the status remains unchanged from the initial entry and has not been updated once throughout the process.

Got an email this afternoon indicating :

*** DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS E-MAIL ***

There has been a recent processing action taken on your case.

The status of the online case has also changed to reflect this.

On a side note I stopped receiving text messages after my EAD was approved (the last one I received was related to my EAD being mailed). I received anywhere from three‚ to finally now just one email each time a change was posted to my account.

I guess I'm just waiting for the mailed I-485 notice now and the physical green card. Based on the shipping time for the EAD‚ I expect delivery on Friday.

As part of this process I signed up for a MyUSPS account on www.USPS.com (US Postal Service). There is a section (Track & Manage) that allows you to set it up so you can see and get notifications of any trackable package that is shipped to your address. Using this I was able to track my EAD and as soon as the package for the green card is received by the USPS will be able to do the same for that. There is also an iPhone app (I'm sure there is an Android one as well) for your phone that let's you see the tracking information.

When things start to get rolling‚ things can go pretty fast. From seemingly nothing happening until Day 106 (EAD approved) to interview completed and green card mailed (Day 147)‚ it's been pretty fast. Just six days ago we had our interview and left without approval. I kind of won't believe it's really over until I get the green card in my hand and like I've said before; for us it's been a long time waiting to do this. Don't wait as long as we did to start the process.

Again‚ I wish you all the best of luck and stay strong.
