  • Can I140 serve as a valid residence status?

My family and I are planning to get green card in the United States.
I was living in the U.S with E2 visa when I concurrently filed both I-140(from the company I worked in) and I-485.
Because of insufficient documents, my I-140 was denied. As a result, my I-485 was also denied automatically. This was in May 2016.
My attorney sent an appeal letter telling them to reopen both cases with additional documents, and I-140 was finally approved in October 2016.
We have not heard back from USCIS regarding reopening I-485, so I went to talk to USCIS about my case.
They told me that I need to refile my I-485 with the approved I140. I was worried that I won't be able to, because I don't hold any valid visa at this moment since I stopped renewing E2 visa. However, they also told me that after my I140 was approved, my whole family and I regained our E2 status for 2 years.
I was wondering if this is possible? Can I refile I485 with the approved I140? Can I also work with this approved I140?
