Interview always required?

From what I see around the forum it seems like most think the interview is a mandatory step.
What I have been told by my case lawyers is that the interview is optional and more and more they are only doing interviews when they need some form of confirmation.

What is everyone's opinion, or do you have clear information on the subject?

Depending on several factors an interview may or may not be necessary.
