K-3 visa without adjustment of status

K-3 holders may apply to USCIS for an extension of status in 2-year increments as many times as needed, as long as the Alien Relative Petition or Application for Adjustment of Status is still pending adjudication.
Adjustment of Status is not mandatory, the visa holder may leave the country and let their visa expire. However, they can not remain in the United States indefinitely without Adjustment of Status, as extensions are not granted to those with approved Alien Relative Petitions but who have not filed Adjustment of Status, and change of status to any other non-immigrant classification is not permitted.
