Emigration of minor children of USC

I have 2 minor children that need to immigrate next year.

I was considering letting them come here on a travel visa and then doing a conversion (Adjustment of status) if they want to stay here. (They have never been to the USA so they might not like it...)

1. Is this allowed
2. How long does it typically take?
