  • Will I get a New Social Security Number once my status is changed?

I was an international student and received a social security number for my co-op employment that was part of my degree program. I graduated in 2009. I'm now married to an US citizen and changing my status accordingly (I-485). I was wondering if I'm granted the change of status, will I be issued a new social security number of be reissued the one I received when I was an international student? I put my old social security in my i-485 application, but when I got letters from USCIS about them receiving my application, the letter left the social security part blank.

    Thanks

The number on your social security card will never change. After your status change, you yourself have to go to your nearest Social Security Office and tell them that your status has been changed. Does yours say anything?

I too had an existing SSN and gave that information to USCIS as part of the the application process and it was never included on any of the correspondence. I also had an existing Alien Registration # which has remained unchanged throughout and is on my EAD.

I opened an online account on the Social Security website to check my Social Security account and had no issues accessing the information pertaining to my SSN. I also created a my E-Verify account to validate my work authorization when I received the EAD and used my SSN as part of the validation check.

Depending on what kind of SS card you have‚ you may at some point want to get a new one (it may indicate restrictions on it)
