  • Change of Name

    Hi all,
I have a question again. For those that had an experienced with name changed from single/legal name to married name (husbands family name)

When I applied for my AOS (married based) I used my legal name (single name) in all my forms that I submitted. Today, I will go to SSA for a corrected name which is to changed my SSN name
    to my husbands family name.
Heres my question, At the interview, does the IO ask the applicants if they want to use the husbands family name? I am concern that my SSN will be in my husbands family name, while my GC is still my legal name.

Any insights about this? Appreciate your feedbacks.

    Thanks a lot!

During the interview the IO told me that the name they will put on my green card is the name I have on my marriage certificate even before he asked us questions.

If you changed your name as part of the marriage, then that new name IS your legal name from that moment forward, and you need to use that name on all the forms that ask for your name from that moment forward. You don't have a "choice". The marriage certificate indicating a name change is a legal document of name change (similar to if you went to a court and got a court order of name change). Note that not all people change their names as part of marriage, so you need to make sure your marriage certificate actually says you changed your name.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.

Hi! My marriage certificate states my maiden name. I have filed forms with maiden name and have just received EAD/AP card.
Can I now change my name in court or is it better to wait once Green Card will be issued?
