  • Visa Expired- DS 2019 still valid

I came to the US on a three year J1 visa. I recently applied for a 2 year extension and was granted a new DS-2019 valid until 2019.

I have been told by my program sponsor that I don't need to update my visa unless I travel outside of the US.

I will be marrying my fiancé next summer (2018) but want to make sure the expired visa will not be an issue.

I would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

US visas are only for entry. If you don't need to enter, you don't need a visa.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.

Your expired visa won't be an issue as long as you have a valid DS-2019 that states that your participation in the program has been extended. As long as you are not traveling out of the USA then you are good.
