Place of Birth - State name changed

Hi All,

My indian passport has (Dehradun, Uttaranchal) as the place of birth whereas birth certificate has (Dehradun, Uttarakhand). Dehradun is town name and State name was Uttaranchal between 2002-2007 and changed by Goverment of india to Uttarakhand since 2007. Do I need to change the state name in my passport or I can explain this on the form?

A follow up question just to make sure that I understand better. The recommendation is to write the birth certificate place of birth is because this has the current name of the state or one should always write the BC place of birth in case of difference. Also, should I mention somewhere that why the place of birth is different between BC and passport.

What is in the passport is irrelevant for purposes of AOS. They ask for birth certificate however and am fairly certain they march that information with what you have written down and even then only the country matters. City/State/Province are just for data collection purposes.
