I was a silent reader on this site for sometime, it has informed/ help me self file my AOS May 25th. My question is:- my only form of ID is my passport, which I now realize will be expired Sept 12. My interview is schedule Schedule for Sept 28. In order to renew I have to send it to the consulate here which then sends it to my country which takes on average 6-8 week. Can I go to the interview with my expired passport or get a state ID? I am so worried about this.

I called and checked with the USCIS 800 number to see if this would be sufficient for me to give as ID for my biometrics appointment and they told me it would be.
I used the passport for my biometrics appointment and once I received the EAD‚ I used that to get my state ID.
When I had my interview the IO asked for our ID's (my wife and mine) to make copies. Which of course we gave him (my state ID and her drivers license). I showed a long expired passport to the IO (they didn't ask to see it) that had some immigration related stamps in it (that particular passport expired in 1998). Nowhere during the entire AOS process was it an issue that I did not have a valid passport.
I was approved for my 10 year green card the day after our interview. In many cases now you can not even renew a passport from outside of your home country without being able to provide documentation that includes proof of residency in the country you are applying from. I know this is now the case with the UK and I believe many other European countries.
