  • Interpreter for the joing sponsor on i-864

    Hello,
I'm a f-1 student on OPT, processing AOS after the marriage.

We needed a joint sponsor since my husband does not meet the requirement for i-864.
My father in law kindly offered us to be a joint sponsor Many thanks

    Here's my question,
Father in law, he's a lawful permanent resident, but he doesn't speak English at all.
Can I be the interpreter for him? or does it have to be someone else completely not relevant?
Or can my brother in law be the interpreter?

    Thanks a lot people!!

Even though they don't explicitly forbid you, the beneficiary, from being the interpreter, it's strongly recommended that you have somebody else, preferably a family member of your father-in-law.

If you were the interpreter, there'd be a conflict of interests. What's stopping you from twisting the questions and/or modifying the responses on the I-864 to your advantage while putting your father-in-law at risk? For example, you might not tell him the fact that if you used any federal aide program while still being a permanent resident, the government would sue or demand payment from your father-in-law.

So your brother-in-law would be a much better choice.

Income from your OPT can also be used to boost your husbands joint income if it will continue after you obtain a green card and if your combined income meets the poverty threshold you eliminate the need for a joint sponsor.
