  • Change of Address

Recently I applied for 485. I took a post box number to redirect my mails to that PO. Do I still need to file AR11 with my current address as PO Box? Also do I need to call INS to give the PO Box as my new address. Will they accept it?

    Thanks in advance - Ram

    Below is my opinion:

Yes, you need to file change of address with USCIS after your move even you have mail forwarding set up. The reason will be as follows: First of all, USPS has a rough committment to forward mail for a 6-month duration; often times, it is not enforced. For governmental mail, if recipient is changed, letters will be bounced back. Another policy is for every mail USPS forwards due to change of address, it will send a letter to sender to notify them of your new address. This will upset USCIS. Secondly, at time of I-485 interview, upon approval, hopefully the interviewer might be picky about you reporting to Agency about address changes. Altogether, it is recommended to keep INS updated with the new address.

To answer the second part of your question: USCIS will not accept PO Boxes as permanent addresses, you can use PO as mailing address only. When filing AR, please make sure that you change both.

Any concerns: yes. The top one is your address is never updated, in which case, you are the same as not having filed AR, but the difference is you have the letter to explain to officers if asked.
