  • Social Security Card After GC Approval

    Hello friends,

My husband and I did our interview last Tuesday 2/13 and we received the approval letters for I-130 and I-485 last night. So my question is, I was working on OPT and was able to get social security card couple years ago. However, that card said 'Valid for Work Only with DHS Authorization'. Now since my GC is approved, am I supposed to receive an updated social security card automatically? Or do I have to visit SSN branch to apply for one? Or maybe there is no need for a new card at all?

    Thanks for any information!

When you get some proof of permanent residency, e.g. a green card or an I-551 stamp, go in to an SSA office and update your status, and you will get a new card without the restriction text.

You are supposed to update your status with SSA whenever it changes, including when you naturalize to a citizen, even if you already have a card without the restriction text and thus don't need a new card.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.
