  • I485 Mistakes - Impact during interview

    Hi everyone,

My interview is coming up next month (Marriage based AOS to USC, PD 6/4/17). While taking a second look at the forms we have submitted I found out a mistake. On the question that asks to list all the organizations you ever belonged to I forgot to mention a volunteer organization that I used to be a part of back home. We did community service projects etc, but I totally forgot to list this in my application but had earlier disclosed them in my visa applications. How should I go about correcting this record? Should I mention this to the IO when we are reviewing the 485 application?

Second, I had a J1 visa which was subject to 212(E) two-year-home stay requirement. I have fulfilled the requirements successfully and stayed home for two years post my J1 visa. I filed under the earlier version of the i-485 question which had the J1 212(E) requirement in a single question, something like "Were you ever subjected to 212(E) requirement and have not completed the home stay requirement". The answer was for me definitely "No" under the old form, but checking out the new form I see that have split the question in two parts (1) Did you participate in a J1 program (2) Did you successfully completed the requirements. I was not thinking about taking additional documentation based on the verbiage of the old form but I feel like I need to take documents to prove the two year home stay requirement based on the new form questions. I am taking scans of my passport with entry and exit dates from my home country and attaching with a cover letter to show the days counted towards the 212(E) requirement. I have read that people suggest taking employment letter, lease, etc. from home country but I was still a student and living at homes so I have none of that. Do you think the passport records are sufficient to prove the requirement?

Let me know if you guys have any thoughts on the issues.

    Thanks in advance.

My interview was just going thru the document, it was last June.

They updated at least 11 or 12 responses.

As long as you don't lie, you won't have a problem.

I think you should bring your school transcript/diploma/passport stamps to prove that you are in school for 2 years; just in case the officer request for more evidence.
