Just signed up to this site as recommended by someone. I met my wife on New Years Day in 2017, just before i was due to fly back from Boston to the UK. We swapped numbers after hitting it off instantly. After months of talking i spontaneously booked a trip in June of 2017 although i had already had a September visit planned in to the area. After that, and spending two months helping her sister in London, i decided I would propose in September and we set a date to be married in September 2018. My boss then agreed to let me have a three month hiatus to spend time here and conduct some business trips. After flying out on 21st December 2017, and after that we decided we did not want me to return home (I had built a great relationship with her 4 year old son who is fatherless) we decided to do an AOS. My timeline so far:

We filed I-130, I-130A, 1-485, I-765, I-864 together all at once. I left off the I-131 as we were not sure on any travel needs, and I just felt if it is needed i would apply on that basis and just pay separately. We also held back on I-693; in the event there were any delays and i needed to then re-do it, as it is only valid for so long and medicals aren't cheap! Also i did not want to add stress of an extra form as we decided very last minute, as you'll see from our timeline!!

We used an attorney who is a friend of mine and let us use his account with USCIS for a very small fee, and he simply checked our paperwork and made sure we compiled enough evidence for the forms. So we have been lucky in knowing someone who could help, without having to pay heavy fees.

        Entered US: 12/21/17 (90 days expired 03/20/18)
        Married: 03/12/18
        USCIS: Chicago, IL
Filed Docs: 03/16/18 (couriered by my attorney with FedEx)
        Docs received @ USCIS: 03/19/18

        Couple of questions:

When are most people getting their work permit through?
How long does it normally take to see the filing fees get charged to the card?

          1. I read something in between 2 and 3 months in general but some cases can take longer. It's difficult to say because it varies over the year
          2. Again, very different answers, I read from a full week to 15 days

2-3 months isnt accurate anymore. It's around 5months average these days. And that's coming from a USCIS officer

My calculus came only from previous experiences reported by other applicants. Thanks for a better estimation!

Ouch, that could cause some problems! I've been talking to my employer in the UK, who I have been a Business Development Manager in the UK for a while now with. They are interested in continuing my employment, and I have also been head-hunted by an American firm who i have had a relationship with through my UK company after they heard i was staying put.

Is there anything that can be done, or am I simply at the mercy of USCIS?

Well you are kinda at the mercy of USCIS, however you could plea for expedition due to financial hardship.. you should look into that..

After doing some research, some people seem to have had success by claiming a loss of a job offer is enough to claim financial loss as a reason. In these cases, they have had to provide proof by means of a signed offer of employment on company letterhead from the company making the job offer, and this appears to have worked for them and they've received their EADs pretty quickly.

Thankfully i have my UK company offering me continued employment out here, and another company head-hunting me at the same time. I will try this appraoch and then will elt people know how I get on with that method.

After search marriage based EAD card in this site, it takes about 4 to 6 months.
If you need EAD card earlier, try financial loss to USCIS officer.

There's no fees for I 131 if there's a pending I 485 so you can file it anytime you want. My check was cashed on 15th day(not business days) .
