  • Changing Field Office

    Hello,
We 've already received eveything other than interview notice. the waiting time gonna be 11-17 months so we are thinking to move to a different city that has less waiting time.

my question is: if I decided to change to another field office, I understand that I will need to change my address, however, am I required to physically live and work in the city that the new field office located or I don't have to be there until I received the interview notice? Thank you!!!

Here is the link to search for the field office that services your zip code or you can search for it by state. https://www.uscis.gov/about-us/find-.../field-offices

Let's take Ohio -where I might just move, for example. They have 3 field offices. Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinatti.

If you select Cleveland and scroll down to service area, you will see that it is by zip code. So if your zipcode is 45801 your field office is Cleveland - the fastest in the country. https://www.uscis.gov/about-us/find-...d-field-office. But if you're in 45101, then that zipcode is serviced by Cincinnati.

You can't just change to another field office. You need a permanent address in a zip code that is serviced by that field office. Otherwise, we would all put down Cleveland, OH and rent a place a month right before the interview - if I am understanding correctly.

If you're going to move, then move and establish yourself elsewhere. But don't tell USCIS you're living somewhere when in reality you're not working there, studying there or anything. What if they decide to knock on your door in the new city?

None of this is legal advice; simply my humble opinion.

On second thought. Whatever you decide to do, execute it to perfection. That's all I am going to say. Places with shorter processing times are looking very attractive right now.

      All the best!

Can you actually change field office?

I just have filed I-130 in NYC but am planning to move San Diego where is close to the home of my USC wife. Guess we should hurry up and move so the green card process can move along faster too?

That is up to you. San Diego, CA is definitely a faster field office.

In terms of quality of life, there's no comparison. We'd move West in a blink if we didn't have my stepson's mom in NYC. Go for it. Fast process sure is a perk but I would not even think about it, you'll get your EAD and AP soon if not already.

We are seriously considering moving to San Diego after talking to a lawyer based in San Diego.

My USC wife can easily get a job and rent a place there. However, I am on H1B working in NYC so my mobility is limited. I know some people in my office work remotely from the Chicago office but my boss values face time.

I have a kinda crazy idea. I still keep my job in NYC and my H1B like normal. But on Friday nights I fly to San Diego and fly back to NYC Sunday nights until I get the green card. Obviously I will change my address and do my interview there in San Diego. Do you guys think this is OK?

It is possible although I would not want it personally. If you dont mind the flights, have a bed in both places and dont mind being away from your wife 80% of the week until the GC, I dont think anybody can stop you ;-)

Just seems like a lot of extra hassle and extra cost in order to get the green card sooner.
