  • Filed I-485 AOS in NY but Moved to NJ temporary

Hi, I filed for I-485 AOS through marriage in NY where all our family lives and we got married but I temporarily moved to NJ for a year for my job and plan to move back to NY.

Our main address is my mother in law's address who will be taking care of our all the mails we will receive from USCIS and that has always been the address we gave to USCIS.

Will this be an issue during the interview in NY field office? All of our paper work such as insurance, taxes etc are all filed in NJ.

I do not want to do an address change because I plan to move back to NY and also our move in NJ is temperory and we have to look for a new home in NY as we will no longer be living with our parents in NY when we move back.

    Please advice. Thanks

as long as you put the address you were living at when you applied, you can just tell them and they will be OK.

I changed jobs and told the guy my new job info when he went thru the form. he actually asked if i lied and i pointed out the date i applied i was still at my old job lol

      Mailed Application N400 - 11/14/2017
      Interview N400 - 6/07/2018
      Oath - 8/30/2018

So it is ok if I tell them that my move to NJ is temperory and I plan to go back to NY. Are they really particular about where you live?

You are required to report a PERMANENT change of address in 10 days of moving. However since this is a temporary move you should not be worried about it. Just make sure you have access to the mail for the address they have on file because that is where they will send all your notices. When you have a new permanent address after you return to NY then you should update your address then.

Ok, thank you. I feel very relaxed. I thought I was breaking the law.

Just one thing, in case, I do get an interview in NY and I drive there from NJ, is it okay to show documents from NJ like our temperory lease contract for 6 months? and also I got my car registered in NJ. Would those be ok? I plan to change them once I permanently move back to NY.

            Thanks

They are more concerned if you tell the truth.
