I live in Virginia. There are two USCIS field offices in the state (according to google), neither are close enough to reach on foot--though I suppose i could start walking 2 days before! HA HA HA HA.

I think you may be able to get your driver's license renewed with your I-485 pending I-797.

In accordance with Va. Code ?46.2-328.1, the following are eligible to apply for a driver?s license or ID card:
? Citizens of the United States
? Legal Permanent Residents of the United States
? Conditional Resident Aliens of the United States
? Holders of a valid, unexpired nonimmigrant visa status
? Individuals with a pending or approved application for
        asylum in the United States
        ? Refugees
? Individuals with a pending or approved application for
temporary protected status in the United States
? Individuals with approved deferred action status
? Individuals with a pending application for adjustment of
status to legal permanent resident status or conditional
        resident status

This document says the same https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/webdoc/...res_review.pdf

        https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/webdoc/...doc_status.pdf This one as well.

You won't be able to "renew" your license. From what I read, you have to submit your application as if it were your first. I skimmed through the document. Double check yourself.

Yeah, i might give the DMV HQ in Richmond a call. The first PDF file you linked has the latest data 07/2018. If nothing else, that sets the precedent. The attorneys are telling me a different story.
The USCIS field office closest to me is 1 hour away (by car). I checked. Uber or Lyft is the way to go I suppose, unless the EAD shows up before that.

Your attorney does not benefit financially from helping you get your driver's license. The same goes for expedite requests for EAD/AP. They usually just tell you to wait your turn and make it sound like it is impossible.

Alternatively, you could try getting a driver's license in NJ or maybe Delaware?

I would just go to your local DMV and bring all your I-797s. Print screenshots from your online USCIS accounts, screenshots from your case tracker app. That way you can back up your I-797 I-485 pending and give the DMV officer peace of mind that you are in fact adjusting status.

Yeah, i figure attorneys are sharks.
Proof of residence will be tricky for anything out of state. Besides, i can't even drive so i'm marooned in my city. Thankfully I can ride my bike to work.
I'm in a farily rural location. The DMV officers aren't as in the know. I remember them being a little lost and less than helpful when I last extended my drivers license while on H1b--official documents. They had to call Richmond and had me wait for a couple of hours at the DMV only to tell me "come back another day". I figure i'll get more clarity by calling Richmond next week and see what they say rather than trying to convince my local DMV.

              Thanks for your suggestions though!

If you have a friend in another state, and they are OK with it, you can use that address. You can also present a notarized affidavit of residence. Homeless people use that all the time to get state IDs. They submit a notarized affidavit of residence stating they reside at X shelter.

Here is a screenshot of a template I found online. UPS and most banks usually have a notary public on site.

                  Interesting. Thanks for the suggestion.
I think i'll hold off. It sounds rather risky. Given the current immigration climate, I really don't want to give anybody any excuse to pick me up in a Black Suburban and drive me to some field office for questioning.

                  • New Card Is Being Produced

Just an update on the I-765

08/08/18: "New Card is Being Produced"

Is the card sent by registered mail, i.e. Signature required?

Glad to see some movement. I just might be able to drive to the grocery story before the end of the month!

                        LOL congrats!
I just answered this via private message to someone who asked.

I simplified the signature because you can only fit 500 characters total. It seems like that includes spaces, too.
The notifications started coming in first from the USCIS case tracker app. I have an egov account.

As you can see, opting in to receive all and any kind of alerts saved the day here. My local post office saw the mailing and rerouted it to our previous address in North Carolina. Seriously??? We had canceled the mail forwarding service more than a week before that. So as soon as they scanned it and set it to be forwarded, I got an alert. I rushed out of the house and headed there. Took my husband's driver's license, his passport, our marriage certificate. The postal clerk went to the back and had one of the warehouse guys dig it out of a truck that was headed to the airport. I mean...

Do everything in your power to make sure you get it. You can even tell your post office to hold it at the post office for you. That way if you aren't home, you can just go pick it up.

                        All the best,

                        USCFFS

PS: It was mailed on the 3rd and I got it on the 4th. Originally, USPS showed ETD of 08-06-18 by 8pm.

I just answered this via private message to someone who asked.

I simplified the signature because you can only fit 500 characters total. It seems like that includes spaces, too.
The notifications started coming in first from the USCIS case tracker app. I have an egov account.

Pre-Shipment Info Sent to USPS, USPS Awaiting Item

WoW!! good thing that you got that alert! Congrats!!!!!

I'm 90% sure that my EAD will be delivered to my lawyers office.

Congrats to you, too! I am glad to see other Minnesotans are getting their EADs. That's key for those with a slow field office. And THANK YOU for adding your timeline to your signature.

Lets see if i get a tracking number before the weekend! It's getting closer!!

                              Sitting tight!

p.s. The September Visa Bulletin was published. It's caused quite a bit of uproar because final action dates for almost ALL employment-based (EB1, 2, 3) GCs have retrogressed. I guess USCIS is swamped and they're using this time to get caught up--See section G. Honestly, i'll be happy to have my EAD in hand for now! (I'm quite liking my bike rides to work, but i'd like to have my drivers license too!!!)
