  • No receipt notice after 3 months

    Hello everyone,

A little background story. I am currently on OPT visa expiring 7/9/2018. However, my husband (US Citizen) and I got married legally on 1/13/2018, and have our lawyer file 485 on 3/15/2018. Our application was shown received by USCIS Chicago lockbox on 3/18/2018 on the post office slip.

Now I am really worried because we have not gotten any receipt notice yet at all! My lawyer kept mentioning about how the processing time has drastically increase for Green Card application, but what I am confused is that, why haven?t we receive some sort of notification or case number yet after 13 weeks? Is this normal? I am starting to think of hiring another lawyer.

    Please advice!

You can always call USCIS and ask them about that. Just give them a call (press 1 1 2 to connect directly to Tier 1 customer representative). Sometimes lawyers are not very helpful. I hired one but we did all documents by ourselves and the lawyer was just to help us calm.

Were your checks or money orders cashed? You could use that as an indication that the application is accepted.

Sometimes these lawyers don't do much, especially if your case isn't complicated, you're better off just taking your time and doing it yourself.

Yes, we called our bank and got informed that the cashier checks were cleared on March 22, 2018 (4 days after USCIS supposingly received our application. However, when I called USCIS, they don?t have any of my application information for I-485 besides my current OPT information.

I don?t think I will rely on my lawyer much from now. It?s just sad that we might have wasted so much time with this lawyer.

You should email [email protected] with all the details you have for the package. They typically reply within 15 days if they find the package. If there was no receipt # generated, calling USCIS helpline will not help as they only can answer when the receipt is generated. I sorted out similar issues of mine by emailing to the above mentioned email address.
