  • Disappointing interview! Morale low

So... we went for our interview today and for some reason I don't feel good about it.

I submitted my sealed i-693 envelope with my application in January but the IO asked me for it again. When we told him we had already submitted, he was surprised. He checked the application again and finally found it. Then he said my medicals said I tested positive for mumps, rubella and varicella and at the end of the interview, I'd have to go back to get retested/get a letter from the clinic saying I'm cleared. He issued us an rfe after the interview.

    Now, our interview proper:

Background information: I was over-prepared and even had a checklist for all our supporting documents. This officer just asked us to:

    1. Tell him about our love life and timeline from when we met till marriage, and what plans we had for the future.

    2. After this, he asked for all documents that had both of our names. This threw me off balance as I had to pick several documents from the sections I had marked as "evidence of cohabitation", comingling, etc.

    3. He kept asking random questions about our love-story timeline. Like how we met, who proposed, why my spouse's parents weren't present at the wedding, if we wanted kids, if either of us had spoken to each other's family, etc.

    4. He asked if we had pictures. I gave him the photos we had printed. About 45 pictures (each picture is a collage of 4 photos so that's 4 x 45 pictures). He kept looking at the pictures while we talked about our love story and plans for the future.

    5. He asked random questions about a few pictures. E.g. I see you in a hospital in here, was it during childbirth? Do you have kids together? We said no, it was me having surgery. Then a picture of us carrying high-grade military assault rifles lol. It was just a laser tag event we went to.

    6. He kept all the photos and documents and typed for ages.

Now, this is about to get interesting... This officer said: I'll be approving your case, but I can't do so until you bring back an updated medical or letter like I said earlier.

He said: congratulations in advance, told us how to remove conditions in 2 years, how to get citizenship in 3, gave us a white paper that explained the steps. He also told me how to get my ssn card updated from "employment authorization only" to something permanent and how to change my Driver's license from temporary to permanent with my green card.

From here, we just talked about life. How he wants to relocate to Florida, Oklahoma tornadoes, Florida hurricanes, etc.

Finally, he said if we could get the medical thingy sent back to him before the end of the day, he'd approve our case today and we'd get my GC in 2-4 weeks. He took us to a window and told us to drop it in the box there or if we couldn't, to mail it to uscis.

We rushed to the medical center. We were told there that the officer didn't know how to read medical results. They said testing positive for the those things were a good sign and it meant I didn't need any vaccines and I was clear (please look at your i693 reports under mumps, rubella and varicella to see what I mean). They wrote a letter explaining this and concluded with something like "this applicant is cleared, etc."

We took this letter along with the rfe he gave us during the interview and took it back to the interview place. We dropped it in the box and waited to see if anyone would come for it. Finally, somebody came, opened the envelope, read it for a bit and took it off to the IO's office. We left.

My spouse has told everybody that we were approved, my in-laws even visited us today to congratulate us. I sit here expecting approval emails or something but nothing came. I'm slightly disappointed and don't know what to do.

I'm thinking of different worst case scenarios lol. I'm a worrier so I'm just here wondering. Here's my thing... I had prepared and did a very deep self-criticism of our case and expected grilling from the IO. So... seeing our interview being relatively easy/short kinda threw me off.

People are still congratulating us lol, I feel weird. I guess I'll just wait

Congratulations! Sounds like you had a fair to great experience. Hoping with you that all will be well. My interview Kendall, Florida is in a week or two I just collected the results from my new medical and made sure I retained a copy of the results of lab work and immunization that were submitted in the sealed envelope. I asked for my own copy so I can know how to answer the IO if questioned on the the I693.

I think you will be alright. Congratulations again!🎉🎇📬 It will be in the mail soon.

Congrats! I totally get your feeling on this. You were overly prepared and were ready for an Extinction Level Event, and you did not get to display everything that you were prepared for. And truth is, the reason you were not grilled is because you came across as confident and relaxed about your marriage, and you were able to naturally act that way because well, your marriage is true and you were overly prepared. Kuddos on doing a very deep self criticism of your case. That's fantastic.

The officer might be new. To me it sounds like your clinic did blood titers to determine if you had received vaccines in the past. Those tests will read positive for x y or z, which means that you do have immunity to x, y or z. Not everyone is familiar with titer tests and there is no universal format. HOWEVER, the ISO should have just stuck to what the I-693 says on Part 9. Vaccine history complete for each vaccine. Requirements met.

I would definitely make an infopass appointment and if you end up not needing it, you can cancel it later. I think you might just be surprised and have your status change over the next few days. The good thing is that you acted on it right away. In these cases, it's sometimes better to get a Notice of Intent to deny, because it requires you to respond within 30 days and USCIS acts on those faster, as well. I would trust what the ISO said. He probably realized by now he made a foolish mistake and I highly doubt he would keep you waiting for no reason.

      Congrats!

Thanks! In hindsight, I think I should have been happy that the interview was an easy/short one instead of worrying. It lasted about 15 minutes and we didn't do more than giggle like kids when we talked about our love story.

I hope you have a good interview too, I wish you all the best!

Your replies are always very refreshing to read. I feel like we think alike as I was already contemplating making an infopass and canceling if I didn't need it eventually.

Boy! I was prepared for that interview. I was so ready for the worst case scenario.

Thanks for your advise, I wish you the best and hope yours is easy as well.

            UPDATE:

Got text and email that an action was taken on my case. Guess what? "We are now producing your card".

God bless America. Can't wait to have my GC in hand. I guess the IO kept his word. I love my baby and I'm glad he saw that.

Good luck to all current and prospective applicants.

Believe me, I know how you feel. The officer in our interview said he would review the rest of our documents and we'd receive the GC in 10-15 days from approval. He never actually said he was going to approve it although he did have that same talk, about conditional green card, how to remove conditions, how to get citizenship in 3 years etc. So I assumed he wouldn't have talked to us about that if he wasn't going to approve it, nevertheless, I walked out kind of happy but slightly sad about not getting an on the spot approval!

It took about 4 or 5 hours and then I received the update that my card was being produced, but up until that point I was so concerned and just checking my emails every 5 mins, my wife thought I was crazy, I am surprised she didn't decide to leave me right then! Lol.

But all in all I think your experience is positive, you came across well prepared and ready for battle, like I and many others have done. You will get the approval, I know it's hard to wait, it's the longest wait of your life in your head... but it will come.

EDIT -- I see you've got it now. Very happy for you!

                  Congrats!

                    Congrats!😊

I too was overly prepared and my spouse and I went over details on our love story a month prior to the interview, etc. I was a bit disappointed that the whole interview was 10-15 minutes and I wasn't able to show all my evidences that I prepared. The officer barely asked 2 questions and that was it but like I said before on this forum. It is better to be over prepared than under prepared!

Kaylip!!! I have spent the last few months going over your posts. Your timeline gave me hope and I used your case as motivation so many times. Thanks for the advise, you're a good person! That's the feeling I had too lol... like they didn't give me enough room to showcase what I prepared for, I kid you not, I was ready for the worst: Even a stoke's interview (God forbid that for anyone).

I guess my spouse giggling like a kid in an ice-cream shop helped our case, talking about me like I was a front page model, the best thing in the world. lol

Your replies are always very refreshing to read. I feel like we think alike as I was already contemplating making an infopass and canceling if I didn't need it eventually.

Boy! I was prepared for that interview. I was so ready for the worst case scenario.

Thanks for your advise, I wish you the best and hope yours is easy as well.[/QUOTE]

Haha, I TOLD YOU SO! You are officially a legal permanent resident now. Congratulations! Removal of conditions start now. Take a moment to celebrate. I'd suggest continuing to print evidence as it comes up and adding it to your file.

                            All the best,

God bless America. Can't wait to have my GC in hand. I guess the IO kept his word. I love my baby and I'm glad he saw that.

Good luck to all current and prospective applicants.
Congrats! The IO did their job and you did great by being prepared and slugging any of those curveballs.
