  • Marriage question

So Almost every thread I been reading about people?s interviews talk about questions about their wedding. I?m just a couple days away from hitting my 3rd year wedding anniversary. Here?s my problem, my wife and I decided one day that we should just get married. We had been living together for a while and said let?s just do it. July 20th, 2015 we went to the court house and we got married. We even payed two people from the court house to be our witnesses. We didn?t tell anyone about our wedding till weeks later. We didn?t have a ceremony or a party, there?s no pictures either. Will that be an issue when we are ready for our interview?

Nope, not a problem. You will say what you wrote to the officer. I am sure you have pictures of other occasions?

Why is that an issue? Some people are just private. Just because millenials are snapping selfies 24/7 does not mean we all have to. My husband and I did the same thing. I woke up one morning in early August 2017 and decided it was a good day to get married. My husband agreed. We called city hall and they say they couldn't. Then they called us again saying a judge had become available and that he would do it. At that point we were on our way out to play tennis. Ask my husband all these details and he does not know. He had a concussion years ago and you know, his memory isn't the best. I, on the other hand, can tell you what tie he was wearing.

Your story is your story. As I read on an article once "Not every one has an exotic destination wedding or honeymoon. But all married couples go grocery shopping, run out of milk and text each other about it".

You have to show convincing evidence that your marriage is true. You don't need a mortgage or even a lease. I've seen people provide an affidavit of residence in place of a lease. user Tezza provided notarized affidavits of residence. He also provided a notarized advanced health care directive/living will/power of attorney. Now THAT is a sign of a true marriage. USCIS takes that document very seriously.

In your case, I would aim to show longevity. Show evidence from the day you met. I have every single text message we've ever sent each other. We met online and within a few weeks I knew I was going to marry him. No flash mob to propose or anything like that. We talked about getting married. Done.

Focus on concrete evidence of bona fide marriage. If you've been married for 3 years, then you should have no trouble gathering evidence. I am sure you have more evidence than you realize. You will find a lot of resources on this thread.

We weren't asked about our wedding day. Since you've been married over 2 years you'll be getting the 10 year GC. Questions will more likely be on your relationship but be prepared for questions on your wedding day. The fact that you've been married so long shows the IO that you guys are really a couple. To me, that fact supercedes the circumstances under which you were married. Don't worry

True. The officer?s care about the legitimacy of the wedding more than anything. Some barely even look at the pictures.

I don't even know the names of the witnesses. I'd have to look at it to tell you who the witnesses are; even though our marriage certificate is hanging on the wall. No clue. They worked for the judge. They volunteered and took a video with my phone. I took shots out of that video.

Focus on concrete evidence of bona fide marriage. Pictures can be fabricated. 500 pictures do not equal an advanced health care directive/power of attorney. Leave pictures to people who just got married. Being married for longer than 2 years does not exempt anyone from presenting solid evidence.

Remember, if you look on the list of evidence in the instructions, photos are one of the least strongest forms. Yes, they're useful, but for a couple married 3 years, you can provide much more than photos, so don't worry. You will be fine.
